Police spokesman ASP Lamin Njie yesterday confirmed the arrest of Dr Amadou Scattred Janneh, a prominent Gunjur native and leading voice in the protest against alleged environmental pollution from a Chinese fish processing company, Golden Lead.
According to PRO Njie, Mr Janneh was arrested in connection with a case of alleged willful damage of private property, among others. He said several others were earlier arrested and charged over the matter when he, Janneh, was out of the country.
He was however charged in absentia for reportedly leading young people to damage properties of Golden Lead by reportedly removing pipes of the company that they said are polluting the beach.
The police spokesman added that Dr Janneh will go through the same procedure before the court just as the other accused persons in the case.
The Standard has been reliably informed that Dr Janneh was expected to leave for the United States shortly where he is said to be taking up appointment at a university.
