Police prosecutors yesterday filed charges before the magistrates court in Brikama against a Somali national for damaging the property of the national utilities company, Nawec.
Eighty Bafuneh alias ‘Musa Joof’, has been charged on three counts bordering on criminal trespass, malicious injury and stealing.
The offence, according to prosecuting police officer, Sergeant Bobo Jarju, was committed on 6 November 2018 at Brikama.
Mr Bafuneh was accused of intimidating or causing annoyance and unlawfully entering the premises of Nawec.
He is also accused of willfully and unlawfully damaging the electric cables and wires valued at D1,375 and cutting water pipes thereby wasting water valued at D13,375.00, all properties belonging to Nawec.
He is also accused of stealing the electric cable and wires he cut.
The Somali man who was not represented by a lawyer in court pleaded not guilty. However, Presiding Magistrate IO Njie granted him bail in the sum of D15, 000 with two Gambian sureties.
The accused was heard saying that he could not afford the bail amount and the surety as he does not have anybody here. Consequently, when he stepped down, he was seen being escorted by the police prosecutor.
Hearing into his case will begin in earnest on 22 November.
